Appraisal – 7 tips

Updated: 19/02/2022

Provided by: Munir Adam

Applicability:  All frontline clinical staff working in Primary Care.

Background information:  This summary complements the podcast episode Appraisal – 7 tips, on Primary Care UK – Let’s Learn Together.

GENERAL TIP: If you have an internal appraiser, find an external buddy, and vice versa.

TIP 1: POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS APPRAISAL

Pitfall: ‘tick-box’ or a burden.

Solution:  Approaching the appraisal process and learning as an opportunity for improvement will put you in the right frame of mind and empower you to get the most out of it.

TIP 2: ENGAGE WITH IT AS A CONTINUOUS PROCESS

Pitfall: Just something you have to do once a year

Solution:  Adopting a longitudinal perspective, understanding there are inputs, appraisal itself and outputs; regular review of progress (mini-checkpoints), with appraisal as the annual check-point.

TIP 3: MAKE FRIENDS WITH YOUR PORTFOLIO SYSTEM

Pitfall:  Thinking you’ll just remember everything

Solution: Identify your portfolio system, familiarise yourself with it, use it to serve your needs and not vice versa, don’t overload it, and have a live-capturing method if not direct to portfolio.  Sections:

  • You and your work (personal details, roles, work details, qualifications, achievements)
  • Things that have happened (SEA, complaints and compliments, feedback, wellbeing)
  • What you did: Your learning activities and your reflections
  • Appraisal process and outputs
  • Points to discuss during appraisal.

TIP 4: REFLECT ON YOUR EXPERIENCES

Pitfall:  Focusing on what happened rather than what it means to you.

Solution: This is better understood by listening to the episode.  But remember 3 take home points; personal meaning; what you will do differently.

TIP 5: DELICATE MATTERS

Avoid discussing matters which ought to be discussed at a different setting.  This includes pay unless no other option.

TIP 6: PRE-APPRAISAL CHECKLIST

  1. Clarify details of meeting (date, time, duration, etc.)
  2. Expectations based on your particular/professional appraisal system
  3. Review portfolio for key areas of discussion; goals
  4. Any other actions that were agreed with/requested by appraiser?
  5. Points you want to raise

TIP 7: AGREED ACTION PLAN

Agree this with appraiser, have it writing, and ensure it is SMART: Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-honoured.
